On April 9–10, members of our school’s FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) chapter traveled to Hot Springs for the annual State Competition and Convention, where they showcased their skills and hard work alongside students from across the state.
Representing our school in the Focus on Children category were Arizona Rodriguez and Khloe West. This category recognizes participants who use Family and Consumer Sciences knowledge to plan and carry out a project that positively impacts children and the community. Arizona and Khloe’s project focused on teaching 7th grade students about the importance of healthy eating.
As part of their project, the duo created an engaging and educational experience for the younger students. They demonstrated how to make three healthy and delicious snacks: homemade granola bars, yogurt parfaits, and fruit smoothies. After the demonstration, students were able to sample each snack, making the learning both fun and tasty.
Behind the scenes, Arizona and Khloe dedicated many hours to preparing for the event. They set specific goals, developed a timeline and budget, created a detailed presentation board, and wrote and rehearsed a speech. To measure the effectiveness of their efforts, they also conducted pre- and post-surveys with the 7th grade students.
The girls presented their project before a panel of three judges at the state competition. As a result of their efforts and impactful project, Arizona and Khloe received a silver medal in their category—an achievement that reflects their hard work, passion, and commitment.
Also representing our school at the state level was Ciera Luckenbach, who competed in the Job Interview category. This individual event recognizes participants who apply Family and Consumer Sciences and career readiness skills to prepare for employment. Participants must develop a professional portfolio, complete a job application, and demonstrate their communication and job knowledge during a simulated interview.
Ciera created a portfolio that included a cover letter, résumé, job application, two letters of recommendation, documentation of educational enhancement opportunities, and a list of five related skills, talents, and abilities. She then presented her portfolio to a panel of judges and participated in a formal job interview, showcasing her professionalism, preparation, and confidence.
Ciera’s effort and presentation earned her a silver medal as well—an achievement that reflects her strong communication skills and readiness for the workforce.
Congratulations to Arizona Rodriguez, Khloe West, and Ciera Luckenbach for representing our school with excellence at the FCCLA State Competition. Your hard work, leadership, and dedication truly make a difference!
Also in attendance were Piper Swindle, FCCLA Chapter President, and Hunter Belvedresi, Vice President of Communications. Their support and leadership helped make the event a meaningful experience for all who attended.
